Today’s world is experiencing the fourth industrial revolution. And we are watching that the revolution mostly is evolving with the boom in machine learning technology, artificial intelligence and data science. It is evident now that “Data” is the new oil. And to realise that how data nowadays is important, we can see that millions of dollars are being spent for the buying or sharing of data around the world among tech giants to organizers. So, keeping data safe, we need security. And in that magical realm of security, authentication is one of the most important thing.

In security, authentication is the process of verifying whether someone (or something) is, in fact, who (or what) it is declared to be. Whether you are logging into your computer system at the office, checking your account balance on your bank website, or visiting your favorite social media feeds, the process of authentication helps these sites determine that you are the correct person trying to gain access. Authentication is very well defined in simple language by describing a scenario. Suppose, a person wants to log into some app or a person wants to identify himself into a system, then how come the computer will recognize that particular person while it has hundreds of people in it’s database. In this situation, authentication comes into play, as it gives the person a unique identity with a security to seperate himself/herself from the millions in the database. Authentication can be found in various ways. There are three methods of authentication: something you know (i.e. passwords), something you have (i.e. token keys), or something you are (scanned body part, i.e. fingerprint).

Authentication is an integral part of modern day data security. Today data breach is a major concern and today’s authentication process should be well versed so that your private information should be kept intact. Process like multi-factor authentication is very valid because it adds an extra layer of security so that your information can’t get grasped easily. Authentication has become a useful practice in protecting information for both companies and people alike. Strong passwords, good sharing habits, and MFA tools are all ways to help keep your accounts and networks safer from compromise.
